Proposals to build a light rail system in the city are at a very premature stage.

That's according to Galway City Council's Director of Services Ciaran Hayes.

It follows a meeting last week (Nov 19) between city officials and developers Tram Power Limited.

The meeting was convened to discuss a GLUAS sustainable tramway for Galway and officials were given an update on what Tram Power describes as the "most effective way to approvals".

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the company claims GLUAS would be a "top quality improvement for Galway, at no cost to the taxpayer".

However Director of Services Ciaran Hayes says a number of key items have not yet been considered by the firm.

These include the absence of an environmental assessment and a business plan which demonstrates that the proposal would be profitable.

Mr. Hayes says the project is very premature at this point and due process must be followed.
