Proposal to divert Cathaoirleach allowance to Tuam community is defeated
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A proposal to divert the Cathaoirleach's allowance towards the upkeep of graveyards was defeated at a meeting of Tuam Municipal District last evening. Independent Cllr Sean Canney suggested that the six thousand euro allowance be ringfenced towards the upkeep of local cemetries. He said the money would be better spent within the community and while some small grants are available, huge cost is incurred in removing reeds after graves are dug. His proposal was backed by fellow Independent Cllr Karey McHugh but failed to receive sufficient support. County Cathaoirleach Mary Hoade proposed the payment of the allowance and argued the money was deserved for full time politicians stating that it doesn't represent ‘a gravy train'. Cllr Tom McHugh also defended the allowance and stated that there is another provision in place for dealing with burial grounds maintenance when the budget is dealt with. Cathaoirleach Hoade said claims that the allowance represents one thousand euro per meeting are unfair.
