Prominent city centre shop to remove external mural

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city jewellery shop must remove signage and mural paintwork following a decision by the planning appeals board.

The City Council initially refused to allow Claddagh Jewellers retain the signs and artwork at Mainguard Street.

The owner appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála, which has upheld the decision of the City Council.

City planners refused permission for the mural at Claddagh Jewellers due to concerns about the design, scale and colour scheme.

In an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, the owner argued that the shop sign has been in situ since 2006.

The appeal also stated that an accomplished artist was hired to carry out the mural on the shop front and that it reflects the jewellers' manufacturing ethos.

However An Bord Pleanála has refused permission to keep the signage and paintwork.

The Board states that the mural and signs, by reason of excessive scale and design would detract significantly from the appearance of the building at the prominent Mainguard street location.
