An appeal has gone out to the private sector in Galway to help fund a new public bike rental scheme.

The Minister for Public and Commuter Transport Alan Kelly made the appeal at a symposium on the bike scheme at NUIG today.

Up to 250 bikes could be made available at 23 docking stations within 4 square kilometres around the city centre.

The scheme has been tentatively costed at 1.7 million in capital funding by the taxpayer, and 4 million in operating costs over 15 years.
