Fans of verbal dexterity and kicking beats are in for treat when Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip come to Kelly’s Bar. The English hip-hop duo play the Bridge St venue this Sunday, November 7. Dan (who writes the music) and Pip (the rapper) burst onto the scene in 2006 with Thou Shalt Always Kill, and then built up a loyal following through relentless touring.

Dan, who is based in Stanford-Le-Hope in Essex, is delighted to have this dedicated fan base.

“We had a big tour at the start of the year and then we did 30 odd festivals so I’m pretty impressed that people still want to see us!” he laughs.

Dan and Pip moved in the same social circles, but it was a while before they started writing songs together.

“We knew each other for a long time,” Dan says. “We went to the same college. When I say we went to the same college, I went; he used to hang out there!

“Then we ended up working in the same HMV for a long time. But it was really odd – it wasn’t until we went our separate ways that we got in contact and started working together musically. It is kind of strange, but if you’re working with someone you don’t wander up every day and go ‘hey man, I’ve got some new music’.”

But when they did collaborate, the results were immediately impressive. Dan remixed a couple of Pip’s songs but the first new work they made together was Thou Shalt Always Kill. The song was picked up by XFM’s John Kennedy and soon went viral; it has clocked well over two million views on YouTube.

Thou Shalt Always Kill is a belter of a tune that tackles the reverence some bands are held in. Its central mantra points out that Radiohead, The Beatles, The Cure and others are ‘just a band’. Pip’s lyrics are both funny and to the point.

“It’s got a line for everyone in it,” Dan says about their breakthrough. “It was very different sounding to everything else that was out there; it was danceable but it wasn’t dance. Now, people are still discovering it.”
