Two National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) ‘Local Champions’ for the Galway West constituency urged young people to get out and vote in the Bye-Election on Friday 22 May.

With tens of thousands of young people aged 18–29 living in the Galway West constituency, NYCI said young voters have the power to influence the outcome of the bye-election.

Their votes can help ensure that the needs and priorities of young people are reflected in political decision-making, including the need for sustained investment in youth work services, according to NYCI.

Sonya Naumova, NYCI Local Champion from Galway City, said: “Youth work plays a vital role in our communities. It provides safe spaces, trusted relationships, and opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and build confidence. We are calling on all candidates in Galway West to commit to supporting and investing in youth work so that more young people can benefit from these services. Young people deserve to have their voices heard and supported”.

Alánna O'Brien, NYCI Local Champion from Galway city, said: “This bye-election is an important moment for young people to have their say. Decisions made by elected representatives have a real impact on our lives, so it’s important that young people show up and vote. ‘Tús maith leath na hoibre’ – a good start is half the work. Change doesn’t happen by chance; it starts when we take part.”

The National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) is encouraging young people across the constituency to make a plan to vote on Friday 22 May and to ensure their voices are heard.
