Galway set to host National Hot Air Balloon Championships
The sun couldn’t have shone at a more appropriate time as a host of hot air balloons took to the skies over Loughrea to officially launch the 2016 National Championships which will be held over the town in September.
Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council Peter Roche officially launched the event which will take place from September 25 to 30, with Loughrea as its ground base.
Cllr Roche said he was delighted to launch the event.
“Forty international Balloon Teams coming to Galway is a great opportunity for the county, for the communities, business and tourism here,” he said.
Event director Joe Daly said that hosting the event was made possible by the corporate sponsorship by Galway County Council.
“We are delighted to see this event coming to Galway. Already we are getting a great reception from the locals, landowners and businesses.
“Galway County is a beautiful sight from above and the teams are very excited to visit Galway for this first time. This event brings colour, wonder to both participants and spectators.
“Landing in a field and seeing the communities follow the flight is wonderful experience for the balloon teams and spectators alike!” he said.
The 40 competing teams will come from all over the world – including USA, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Italy, France and Spain – and plans are advanced for the mass launch of all balloons, night glow and schools visits.
The event will take place all over the county in different locations depending on wind direction – but Loughrea will be the base.
These Championships are held in various locations in Ireland in conjunction with local authorities and the 46th Championships have been handed over to County Galway in conjunction with Galway County Council - Made in Galway.
The Irish Hot Air Ballooning association is the representative body for Ballooning in Ireland and promotes ballooning in the country with the longest running National Ballooning Championships in the world.
