Parking costs 'scaring' people from Galway City

A city centre businessman has become so enraged by the volume of complaints he has received from customers over the cost of parking in Galway that he has set up a social media page to highlight the issue.

The Facebook page was viewed by 98,000 people within 24 hours of going-on line at the weekend.

Jimmy Griffin, of Griffin’s Bakery on Shop Street, said he had to do something when a customer complained that it cost her €4 to park her car for an hour – or the price of two cups of coffee – in order to support his business.

Griffin’s have been inundated with well-wishers and returning former customers since featuring in a documentary on RTE1 television on Thursday night, with the main feedback being that the cost of parking was keeping people away from the city centre.

“Everyone seems to agree that the cost of parking in Galway is scandalous. There are going to be no family businesses left in the city at this rate.

“People who come into the city centre are going to visit a variety of small businesses. But all weekend people were telling me that the cost of parking is keeping them away,” Jimmy Griffin told the Sentinel.
