Parental demand will be a key issue in deciding the language and patronage of a new school to be opened in the west of the city next year.

The school will be based in Knocknacarra and is among four schools nationwide due to open September 2014.

Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn is inviting patron bodies to apply for the patronage of the new schools by the 14th of June.

Of 20 new primary schools to be built in the coming years to meet rising pupil numbers, seven opened last September and five more will open this September

Speaking on Galway Talks, Labour TD Derek Nolan says he hopes the new city school could be housed in the existing building used by Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh.
