OVER HALF OF ROAD FATALITIES IN WEST RECORDED IN GALWAY

Over half of all road fatalities in the West so far this year have taken place in Galway.

That's according to figures compiled by Gardai as part of the Operation Focus Campaign which show seven lives have been lost on the county's road network in the 11 week period so far this year.

Speed and failure to wear a seatbelt have both been identified as key factors behind the Galway death toll.

These will be the focus of the Garda campaign which aims to reverse the increasing trend.
