Rural communities across County Galway and the Western region are to sign a petition calling on the government to protect small schools.

It follows a public meeting on the issue in Lettergesh in Connemara last evening [Feb 20] attended by over 300 people and Galway West TDs Sean Kyne and Brian Walsh.

A petition will now be circulated across the West of Ireland and will be handed into the Taoiseach's office this weekend.

Joe Killeen is the Central Exective Committee Member of the Irish National Teachers Organisation for Galway and Roscommon.

He says changes to the pupil teacher ratio must be reconsidered or at least postponed
