Even the biggest of houses are beginning to run out of space in lockdown, as cabin fever still proves a problem in homes that could theoretically easily accommodate twenty of them.
The truth is that cabin fever has nothing to do with the size of the cabin; it’s the repetitive nature of every day until eventually even the days themselves blend into each other.
Of course, all of this is magnified if you’re actually living in a place that’s the size of a cabin – which would only make you wish you were Laura Jamieson and Michael Smith, whose home for the duration is quite literally a castle.
Ashford Castle, as it turns out.
Because they are making the ultimate sacrifice of isolating themselves in their workplace – with nothing but 83 bedrooms, 350 acres, a luxury 32-seater cinema and an extensive and expensive wine cellar to keep the wolf from the door.
The downside is that they have to take on duties they weren’t responsible for before – like flushing 160 toilets daily.
But into every life, a little rain must fall – or water must flush, if you’re holed up in Ashford Castle.
And they’re not the only ones lucky enough to have the run of the very big place.
Who will ever forget the tough break that Covid inflicted on Good Will Hunting star Matt Damon, forcing him to batten down the hatches in Eddie Irvine’s €8 million, 5,000 square-foot Airbnb on Sorrento Road, Dalkey?
The Hollywood star, who was here to film the new Ridley Scott-directed flick, The Last Duel, pulled off the rare trick of appearing completely normal while living in a house that the rest of us could only dream of.
