It’s time to appreciate Corofin’s feats – not when they are gone

USUALLY, the feats of a great team are only truly appreciated when they are in decline or gone. Well, now is the opportunity to stand back and laud the Corofin footballers for their ongoing and remarkable domination of the club scene, leaving Micheál Lundy and company on the brink of achieving what no other team has done before.

Just two matches are now between the Galway champions and an historic third consecutive All-Ireland triumph. Even outstanding clubs like Nemo Rangers and Crossmaglen Rangers couldn’t manage it, but Corofin have that unprecedented feat in their sights after coming through Sunday’s latest challenging encounter at Tuam Stadium.

The cynics will testify that Corofin have so much talent and quality in their ranks, it’s relatively easy to sweep all before them, but that is a lazy narrative. Kevin O’Brien’s squad back up their skill with a level of preparation and on-field work ethic which is probably unmatched at this level. The players and management continue to drive exceptional standards, while their ice-cool temperament down the home stretch in tight matches makes them almost the complete package.

Unbeaten in Galway since the 2012 county semi-final and last defeated in the 2017 All-Ireland semi-final when falling to Dr Crokes, Corofin’s consistency and hunger despite all the miles on the clock is astonishing. There have been several close shaves along the way – not least in this year’s drawn county final – but their inner-belief and resolve is such now that they always engineer a passage out of trouble.
