The opening of the M6 motorway between Ballinasloe and the city has been delayed.

Galway County Council say the road is not yet ready for opening as there are a number of safety issues to be addressed.

In the meantime traffic is being asked to divert via Roscommon.

Motorists are being asked not to queue at the M6 entrance in Ballinasloe as they're obstructing workers trying to finish the motorway.

Once the M6 is open this evening arouns 5pm drivers coming from Galway will be allowed to enter the M6 west of the town near Moher.

Those coming from Dublin are expected to be able to enter the motorway at the Shannonbridge road exit in Ballinasloe.

One lane of the motorway will be opened for each direction, and a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour will be in place.
