Only 20 burial plots remain in city cemetery

There are a little over 20 new burial plots remaining at the city cemetery in Bohermore.

City Council Chief Executive Brendan McGrath said existing plots would continue to be opened but there were just 20 or so new plots left in the cemetery.

Finding a new graveyard, Mr McGrath said, was an “absolute priority” of the City Council.

“We need to identify and procure land suitable for a new burial ground. It is an absolute priority that source suitable lands,” he said.

Mr McGrath said it was not just a simple solution of finding a field – a whole load of soil tests and hydrology testing had to be carried out to make sure the sites were suitable for graves.

A number of sites have been identified, and work on would continue to address the shortage of graves next year, he said.

Director of Services Tom Connell said it was a priority issue. Rahoon Cemetery would be extended and new sites sourced, he said.
