NUIG is to drive a new initiative to develop high-quality forestry products in Ireland using new engineering technology.

The half a million euro project involves the creation of the first database of all known properties of Irish-grown timber.

The research will attempt to re-engineer timber to make products with enhanced strength and durability.

It'll take place at the University's timber research laboratory which is the primary such testing facility in Ireland.

The project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine.

Dr. Martina Prendergast, Strategic Development Manager of the Ryan Institute says its hoped the new products will be recognised around the world
