A team of NUI Galway researchers have made a renewable energy breakthrough for Irish wind farms. They've come up with a new backup power supply for wind turbines which break down in high winds. The breakthrough comes after three years of research by a team at the Power Electronic Research Centre at NUI Galway. The technology has even attracted the support of New York-based firm GE Research. Initial tests have already been carried out in Canada and the North Sea successfully. The findings will be fully revealed next Tuesday (30/9) at 3.30pm in the Siobhán McKenna Lecture Theatre, NUIG. Professor Ger Hurley of NUIG says it'll make wind farms safer.
