Pre-clinical research by scientists at NUI Galway has generated some very positive findings for the treatment of diabetic wounds.

The research found that a particular type of adult stem cell could increase wound healing when applied together with a biomaterial from collagen.

Diabetic patients have an impaired ability to heal wounds and are especially prone to foot ulceration which can sometimes result in amputation.

The research carried out by NUIG scientists is published in 'Diabetes,' the official journal of the American Diabetes Association.
