No social housing to be built in Galway City until 2018

Not one new Council house will be built this year or next, despite the lengthy waiting lists.

It has been confirmed by Galway City Council that no social housing has been constructed in the city since 2009.

The City Council has also confirmed to Councillor Ollie Crowe that no new social houses will come on stream until 2018 at the earliest.

There are up to 15,000 individuals on the waiting list for housing in the city but the Fianna Fáil representatives reckons the Government isn’t taking the issue seriously.

The Government recently launched their housing plan which aims to build 45,000 new social housing units by 2021.

However, it has been confirmed to Councillor Crowe by the Council that not one social housing unit will be built in the city this year or in 2017 and there are no guarantees about 2018.

Cllr Crowe said: “At a time when we have 15,000 people on the housing list in Galway City this is simply unacceptable. Action is needed now, not more Government spin.

“The only way to make an effective dent in our housing crisis is with supply and for there to be no social housing coming on stream until 2018 at the earliest is only going to ensure that list grows further.

“This is a major issue which we have heard too much talk from the Government on. Since Fine Gael took office in 2011 not a single social housing unit has been built in Galway City. What needs to happen now is the investment of resources rather than announcing plans and media spin.”
