Date Published: 23-Apr-2009

There won't be any extra taxi ranks in Galway city for the Volvo Ocean Race or the Galway Races this year.Almost 60 sites for new taxi ranks have been identified in the city. However, it will probably be September before a recommendation to use these ranks comes before the Council again.59 ranks have been identified , 11 of which are permanent and 48 are part-time ranks using Loading Bays after loading times. The areas for the full-time ranks are Hotel Rio, AIB Salthill, and at GMIT on the Ballybane road.Temporary ranks have been identified at Market Street, Eyre Square East, Middle Street, Bridge Street, Merchant's Road, Raven Terrace and Claudes in Salthill. Two other locations at Liosbaun and Renmore have yet to be finalised.Ciarán Hayes told the Council that these ranks cannot be activated until councillors vote to amend bye-laws.
