New take on 'Hamlet' from Pan Pan

Pan Pan Theatre will present their award-winning production, The Rehearsal, Playing the Dane at the Town Hall Theatre on Wednesday, November 30 and Thursday, December 1 at 8pm.

The Dublin-based contemporary theatre company will present a highly innovative presentation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy where actors compete to play the title role of Hamlet.

Nine Transition Year students from Coláiste Iognáid (The Jes), in liaison with English teacher Liam Parkinson will play the part of a travelling acting troupe and will perform the play ‘within the play’.

The production is set in a neighbourhood of contemporary Denmark and is an audacious and irreverent riff on Hamlet. This show isn’t about the routine repetition of Shakespeare’s words and imagery but the Shakespearean experience. It explores the rational and irrational concept of choice through the Hamlet Complex. This show is a meditation on human fragility in confrontation with death.

The Rehearsal, Playing the Dane was the winner of the 2010 Irish Times Theatre Awards for Best Production and Best Design and Critics Choice as Best Show at the 2010 Dublin Theatre Festival. The production comes to Galway after a tour to North America, presented as part of Imagine Ireland, Culture Ireland’s year of Irish arts in America 2011 and to Australia as part of the prestigious Melbourne Festival.
