A new school building is to be built in the village of Oughterard next year.

Funding for the school will come from the Department of Education's capital budget and it will be built at the site of the old boys school in Carrowmanagh.

The building will cater for the existing boys' and girls' national schools which amalgamated some years ago.

There's also other good news for schools in Galway.

Tirellan Heights National school on the Headford road, and Coláiste Iognáid in Salthill have both been granted funding for extensions and refurbishment works.

Galway West TD Sean Kyne says people in Oughterard have been waiting a long time for this new school.

Nationally, the Education Minister's announced 56 large-scale school building projects will get underway next year.

The 430 million euro spend will see 18 new primary schools, 12 primary school extensions, nine new secondary schools and extensions to nine more.

Minister Ruairi Quinn says the planned two billion investment in schools has three major benefits.
