President-elect Michael D. Higgins will use a new Kilkenny white oak inauguration chair made by a GMIT Letterfrack graduate at his inaugural ceremony on Friday.
John Lee from County Meath, who graduated from the Furniture Design and Manufacture programme at Letterfrack in 1993, designed and made the new chair.
This will be just the second Presidential inauguration chair and John was commissioned following a tendering process conducted by the OPW to replace the previous chair made in the 19th Century.
