New pool and sports hall for Knocknacarra

A STATE of the art community centre with swimming pool is being considered for Knocknacarra, to built with public and private funds.The multi million euro project, earmarked for the Western Distributor Road, near the new Dunnes Stores and B&Q, is at an early stage but last night councillors were united in welcoming it.The 5,728 sq metre two storey building would house a large sports hall to accommodate two full basketball courts but which would be multi-purpose, a 25 metre swimming pool, a gym and private spa, several meeting rooms and dressing rooms which could be accessed by users of the Millar’s Lane pitches across the road.The project is being driven by Galway City Council and councillors, who pointed out that the area had been a long time waiting for such a facility, agreed, was more than they could hope for.Vincent Traynor of James Smyth Architechts, who presented the plan at last night’s meeting, said his company had been working with the developers on the project for quite some time to ensure it would be ...............
