NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES IN CITY FOR VOLVO OCEAN RACE

Date Published: 22-May-2012
The face of Galway is set to change in advance of the Volve Ocean race finale, with four new pedestrian bridges linking parts of the city.
Construction work is to begin in the coming weeks, to reshape the city for the expected influx of tens of thousands of visitors to the city.
Two one-way bridges will link the Spanish Arch with the Claddagh basin, so people can cross between the two areas without going to the Wolf Tone bridge.
Another two one-way bridges will be installed at the entrance to the docks, which will allow for a flow of pedestrian traffic through the dock area, so visitors will not have to back-track as they did during the last race stopover.
These bridges will be in place during the festival between June 30th to July 8th, but will be lifted out to allow the boats to enter the dock area for the race finale.
