New ‘modern convenience’ work underway on the Prom

Prom walkers ‘caught short’ will have a more modern convenience available to them from November, with the provision of new automatic toilets in Salthill.
Work has begun on the new three unit automatic toilet that will replace the older facility, severely fire damaged last November.
According to a local councillor, the cost of providing the new toilets is €146,000 – the money is expected to be recouped through the Council’s insurance policy.
The new facility will bring to an end the temporary toilet arrangement that had been in place over recent months, following the malicious burning of the old facility.
According to Cllr. Niall McNeilis, the temporary rented toilets provided at Ladies Beach and Blackrock, had cost in the region of €15,000 for the past three months.
He said that the new toilets – along with the provision of a shower facility and changing room – would be a very welcome and much needed addition at the resort.
“Every day of the year, the Prom has thousands of walkers – the provision of a modern toilet and shower facility is a very necessary piece of infrastructure for the area,” said Cllr. McNeilis.
He said that while the tender and procurement procedure in relation to putting the new facilities in place had taken longer than expected, the work had now started and would be completed in nine weeks.
Modern automated loos allows the user a set time to ‘do their business’ and are self cleaning, resulting in significant annual savings in relation to labour costs.
