The National Lottery has moved to defend claims that the West is the main benefactor in recent jackpot wins.

It follows a letter to the editor in this week's Irish Examiner which claimed there was a disproportionate number of winning tickets in the Western region.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the National Lottery says the number of winners in the West is not disproporionate and reflects the population and spend per head in the region.

It has also confirmed that 24 Lotto jackpots have been won so far this year with 9 of the tickets sold in Dublin and three in Galway.
