Warnings that a busy rat run which allow motorists avoid the village of Claregalway would result in a serious accident proves eerily prophetic this week when a young mother, leaving her children to a bus stop, was struck by an overtaking car.

The rural stretch between the N17 and the Headford Road at Clonboo is a frequent short cut for motorists travelling from North Galway into the city.

Galway County Council officials were recently warned that the volume of traffic on this relatively minor road would result in a serious accident occurring.

And that proved prophetic when a young mother was struck by a car while leaving her children to the local bus stop – she was thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle and is now making a recovery in hospital.

Cllr James Charity said that he knows the woman personally and is thankful that it wasn’t more serious. He has now called on Galway County Council to intervene.

The incident occurred when the mother was leaving her children to the school bus stop and a speeding car overtook both the bus, which had pulled in, and a car parked behind it. In the course of this manoeuvre the mother was struck.

“This incident happened on a residential country road and it is little short of a miracle that none of the children were struck or that their unfortunate mother was not more severely injured”, Cllr Charity added.
