Multi-million revamp of city centre proposed

A multi-million revamp of the city centre area – to include the showcasing of medieval Galway, the provision of an indoor food market and the building of a major events centre – is being mooted. And yesterday, a business leader said that this three pronged development was not ‘pie in the sky’ but a realistic and achievable target over the coming years. Frank Greene, President of Galway Chamber, told the Galway City Tribune, that while the city was unquestionably one of the top venues, not only in Ireland but across Europe as well, for its summer festival activity, there was a huge untapped potential in relation to the presentation of the city’s historical and cultural riches. “We all see the success of the English Market in Cork and the recently established Milk Market area in Limerick and we have to say to ourselves: yes, this can happen here in Galway, too. He also said that a regional capital city like Galway was ‘crying out’ for a major conference/events centre, capable of hosting up to 2,500 people. “Here we have a city where people from all over the world want to come to. We need a centre, though, able to accommodate over 2,000 people and [for this] we must look at the proximity of the Docks area to the city centre.” For more on this story, see the Galway City Tribune.
