Galway Gardaí are being urged to implement an ancient law in relation to sulkies in a bid to control their use around the city.

A subcommittee of the City Joint Policing Committee has recommended that Gardaí should enforce the law which stipulates that a name and registration number should be displayed on the side of sulkies.

While the use of sulkies and other horse-drawn vehicles is not illegal, the city policing committee believes their use should be made safer and more controlled.

Committee member and Galway Traveller Movement's Margaret O'Riada said however that people affected by the law should be consulted.

The Committee has also recommended that Galway City Council should write to the Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan to update the law and impose a minimum age of 16 years for drivers.
