More than 3/4 of Galway rental properties below standard

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost 83% of private rental premises in Galway that were inspected by local authorities last year failed to meet basic minimum requirements. The latest figures from the Environment Department reveal that nationally, almost 60% of all rented homes failed to satisfy government standards. According to today's Irish Independent, properties should be free from rot and dampness, have a fixed bath or shower with hot and cold running water, a working heat source and a cooker and washing machine. 86 of 104 premises inspected in the county last year failed to meet these standards. Housing charity Threshold is now calling for landlords to be compelled to pass NCT-style inspections of their properties before being allowed to rent.
