MOBILE PHONE TECHNOLOGY USED FOR FIRST TIME IN CONNEMARA MOUNTAIN RESCUE

Date Published: 30-Dec-2012
FOR the first time ever in Galway, a mountain search and rescue mission, which brought 3 tourists to safety off a Connemara mountain, used GPS technology to identify their location via their mobile phones last evening.(Saturday)
At approx. 5 pm the alarm was raised when Clifden Gardaí contacted the Galway Mountain Rescue Team to assist a group of walkers trapped on Tully Mountain by deteriorating weather conditions.
The team, with the assistance of GPS technology, located a party of three UK tourists and escorted them from the hill. Due to the darkness and high winds this operation took a number of hours but all three were brought to safety and were uninjured in the incident.
