THE up and down nature of Galway United’s season continued over the weekend, with Sean Connor’s side recording an impressive 3-1 win over Drogheda United on Friday night, before rolling over tamely against St Patrick’s Athletic in a 2-0 loss on Monday.
It has been a hectic month for United, who have played seven games in just 22 days, and given the fact the club is operating with one of the smallest squads in the league, those games are starting to take their toll, even at this early stage.
Close to half the United squad are struggling with different injuries of varying severity, but with attendance figures failing to break the 1,000 mark, there is no money there to bring in additional players, so Connor must continue with a small, injury ravaged squad.
Only UCD have a smaller average attendance than United this season, and when you factor in that United have hosted Shamrock Rovers – who always bring a large support – while UCD have yet to, then United could easily be bottom of the crowd list.
United finished the first series of games with a 3-1 win over Drogheda United on Friday night, a result that left them with 11 points after nine games, just one point less than the same stage last season when United topped the league for the first four weeks and were unbeaten in their first five games.
