Mayor raises serious concern over emergency department at UHG

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Mayor of Galway has raised serious concerns concerning the emergency department at University Hospital Galway.

Padraig Conneely says the current system is not working, and the HSE needs to review the way it manages accident and emergency departments.

It follows his visit to the department last evening, where he says he was saddened and shocked by the chaos.

Regina Durkan of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Association told Galway Bay fm news that the situation is extremely bad over the last few days at UHG due to understaffing.

She confirmed that a number of patients who checked-in at the emergency department yesterday are still waiting to be seen, and staff are concerned both for their own safety and the safety of their patients.

Mayor Conneely, who is the chairperson of the HSE Regional Health Forum West, says better use could be made of community care services.
