MAYOR CALLS FOR HALT TO VIOLENCE IN TUAM

Date Published: 25-Aug-2009
There's been a call for action to halt a surge in violence on the streets of Tuam after a riot at the weekend. A gang of between 15 and 20 teenagers, known locally as 'the Hood Rats', is reported to have carried out an unprovoked attack on late night revellers on High Street in the early hours of Monday morning. Several young people are reported to have been assaulted and badly beaten as they were coming out from a nightclub shortly after 2am. Galway Bay FM News understands several of the youths, who are from the town, were wearing balaclavas at the time of the attack. Tuam Gardai have confirmed they received one official complaint of an assault yesterday morning and are investigating the incident.
