Well-known Galway based singer, Mary McPartlan, announces her debut concert at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway on Wednesday, September 29 at 8.30pm.
Rooted in the traditional, Mary Mc Partlan’s distinctively evocative voice, combined with a sense of her own musical personality, allows her to move easily between styles, ranging from the folk song tradition of her native Leitrim, to new and original works. In the space of four years Mary released two massively successful albums, winning acclaim in the Irish and British music media.
Her first album, The Holland Handkerchief was nominated in the 2005 Irish Meteor Awards and was voted Number 1 Folk Album in the prestigious British music magazine MOJO in 2005. Petticoat Loose was released in 2008 and also made it into MOJO’s Top Ten Folk Albums of the Year in 2008. That magazine described her as having “a voice that pins you against the wall . . . Mary Mc Partlan’s beautiful voice conveys tragedy and joy in equal measures, an album of rare beauty . . .”
Mary Mc Partlan, from Drumkeerin in Leitrim, has lived most of her life in Galway. She regularly tours in Ireland, Britain and Europe and also gives workshops in traditional music and song.
