As Tuam Archdiocese is expected to decide this summer if or not to appoint permanent lay deacons, one man ordained for Elphin Diocese will talk about his work at Clonberne Church this Sunday morning.

The Elphin Diocese is one of a number that have already opted to appoint lay people as permanent deacons and married man Willie Gacquinn, will give the talk at 11 o'clock Mass in Clonberne Church.

Fr Tommie Commins, PP, Clonberne invited the deacon, who was ordained last year, and teaches in Roscommon CBS to give the talk.

The Clonberne priest says he thinks it would be very beneficial for priests if permanent lay deacons were appointed in view of the age profile of clergy in most parishes.

The lay deacons can assists priests in the celebration of Mass and can carry out services such as baptisms, prayers at gravesides and prayers before the removal of the remains from funeral homes.

But they are not permitted to perform the sacraments of communion, reconciliation or the anointing of the sick.
