MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO TUAM SEXUAL ASSAULT

The jury has been discharged in the trial of a Tuam man charged with the sexual assault of a schoolgirl in the town over three years ago.
It's after the 47 year old, who can't be named for legal reasons, changed his plea to that of guilty.
Prior to sentencing, Dr. Helen O’Neill, a psychiatrist from the Central Mental Hospital gave evidence that if the man was given a custodial sentence the prison authorities would ensure he was transferred to the Central Mental Hospital immediately.
Sentencing the man to eighteen months in prison, Judge Raymond Graorke commended the young girl for having the strength to bravely fight back when she was attacked.
