A debate on the vision of Galway for the next generation is just one of the events that will take place during a day long symposium organised by the Galway Initiative next month.

The announcement that GMIT will host the debate was made last night at the Galway City Museum by Cllr Michael Crowe and Mayor of County Galway, Cllr Jimmy McClearn.

The organisation which draws its representatives from business, academia, industry, agriculture, education, social inclusion and the arts has been working on developing a long range vision for Galway.Members of the public are urged to participate in the event which organisers hope will be the first steps in starting a public discussion on the future vision for Galway.

Rory O’Connor, Chairperson of GMIT, believes it is now time to make long term plans to secure a better life for future generations.“We need to take a long term view of our future. If we want a better life for our children in 2040 then we need to plan ahead but first set out what it is we want to achieve,” he said.

Paul Shelly, President of Galway Chamber, insists it is essential that the public join in the debate about the future of Galway.
