Iarnród Éireann unveiled a major phase in the redevelopment of Ceannt Station recently – another step on the road to a complete revamp of the Galway station.

Following successful completion of work on the curved glazed roof and the new Platform 5 in late 2025, Saturday marked the new Platforms 3 and 4 now entering service alongside Platform 5.

New platform boarding arrangements that will now be in place which means that customers now enter and exit on the southern side of the station and enjoy access to the new southern concourse including a new waiting room, new toilet facilities and use of the new ticket validators.

It also means that the northern side of the station and Platform 1 will now close for redevelopment works. Works on Platform 2 continue and are expected to be complete over the coming months alongside the launch of an improved retail offering in the station.

This latest milestone equates to roughly half of the station footprint now reopened to the public, ensuring improved passenger experience and a more streamlined service for local rail users.

Funded by the Department of Housing’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the National Transport Authority, the Ceannt Station redevelopment is delivering a modern, fully integrated and fully accessible transport hub in the heart of Galway.

Commencing in early 2024, the project remains on track, with substantial completion targeted for August 2026. It is being delivered by BAM Ireland for Iarnród Éireann.

Ultimately, the investment will deliver more platforms for more capacity, increasing the number of platforms from two to five, supporting significantly expanded rail services well into the future.

It will also mean a new southern entrance and façade to Ceannt Station, creating an attractive modern station including new customer facilities, retail units and toilet facilities.

And it will boast enhanced connectivity and interchange between rail and bus services, making it easier for customers to use multiple modes, and including improved accessibility and waiting areas, as well as Bus Éireann ticket office improvements.
