The Galway Macra na Feirme branch is calling on the government to introduce a fresh focus on youth mental health in rural Ireland.

It comes as figures provided by the HSE show that 583 children and adolescents in the West are awaiting an appointment for mental health services.

At the end of the second quarter of 2012 453 young people were on a waiting list for less than 12 months with 130 waiting over 12 months.

Aoife Helly of Macra na Feirme says action is needed to provide vital support to those suffering from mental health issues.
