Gangs of young Dublin criminals are travelling to Galway on the new M6 motorway to raid houses in the county, a joint policing committee has heard.

Loughrea Superintendant Enda Walsh told last night's committee meeting that large empty houses are being targeted by these criminals.

He said the M6 has opened up the west to the gangs who travel from the capital in modified cars.
