The Galway-based online TV show Lucky Run has won the RTÉ Storyland online drama competition for 2011, overcoming The Last Security Man and The Outlaw Concy Ryan in the final showdwon to claim the title.

Produced by Galway company, Capaillín Bán and filmed entirely in Tuam, Lucky Run boasts a cast that includes Fred McCloskey, Seóna Tully, Midie Corcoran and Larry McGowan among others. The writer of the series, Achill native Colm Cafferkey, is “absolutely delighted” with the win, which was announced last week.

Lucky Run began filming in early January and the team behind it never knew from one month to the next if they would get to make another episode.

It was one of eight dramas accepted for the online series with the new episode from each production company being put up on the RTÉ website every month. The public then voted for their favourites and the show with the lowest public approval rating was voted off in each round.

As the public voted, shows such as The Masterplan and Rent a Friend fell by the wayside and Lucky Run went from strength to strength.

The show’s producer, Eamon Stack puts this down to the nature of the series.

Lucky Run tells the story of a guy who wakes up after a serious session to find his life is in bits and he has to get himself together to figure it all out. For better or worse, I think a lot of people can relate to that!

“We had a great team working on Lucky Run,” Stack continues, “people with quality experience and a great attitude. Hopefully we can keep going and work together on another project.”

What exactly that project is remains to be seen, but at the moment, the cast and crew of Lucky Run are celebrating their current success.Meanwhile, Headford based duo Ivan and Molly McMahon were responsible for The Outlaw Concy Ryan which was a runner up in the online competition, which was filmed in the Moyross Estate in Limerick City, where they received great support.
