LOW POLLING TURNOUT FROM GALWAY ARAN ISLANDERS

Date Published: 09-Nov-2012

A low turn-out is reported from Galway Aran Islanders who cast their ballots on the Children's Rights Referendum until 10 last night.

Boxes from the Aran Island of Inis Mor are expected to be transported to the mainland this morning.

It's understood just over 70 of the 660 voters there had voted by teatime last evening, while 36 out of a total of 200 had voted on the nearby island of Inis Oir.

Over 1,100 people are registered to vote on the Aran Islands.

Residents of 12 islands around Ireland have now voted ahead of the rest of the country who will cast their ballots tomorrow.

Of the 2 thousand plus registered island voters nationwide, less than 1 thousand cast their ballots.
