Loughrea's new Fire Station

AFTER a 50-year wait, plans for a new Loughrea fire station are now advancing – with a contractor due to be appointed by mid-April.

Cllr Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher (FG) described the progress as “fantastic news for Loughrea,” noting that the town has waited “well over 50 years” for a dedicated fire station.

He made the comments at this month’s meeting of Galway County Council after the local authority said it hoped a main contractor would be appointed by mid-April, paving the way for construction to begin shortly after that.

The project has progressed through several stages in recent years, gaining Departmental approval and funding under the national Fire Services Capital Programme, which was followed in turn by the approval of Part 8 planning in 2024 – and then permission to proceed to tender in 2025.

The development, which will be located at St Lawrence’s Fields on the Athenry Road, will comprise a single-storey, three-bay fire station.

It will also include a training tower, training yard and storage areas as well as associated site works.

It forms part of a wider national programme aimed at modernising fire service infrastructure. Once complete, it will significantly upgrade fire and rescue operations in the area.

The proposed fire station is expected to enhance emergency response capabilities in Loughrea, providing modern facilities for firefighters and improving safety for the wider community.

Construction is expected to get underway once a contractor is appointed, with the project currently targeting completion in 2027.

Further updates are expected once the contractor appointment process is completed in the coming weeks.
