The sight of chewing gum along the city's main streets could become a thing of the past.

North West MEP, Jim Higgins wants the Environment Minister to introduce a tax on chewing gum, similar to the plastic bag levy.

MEP Higgins says the City Council's budget is already stretched and a tax on gum would help the local authority cover the cost of clean up.

Fine Gael MEP Higgins told Galway Bay fm news that he is calling for a five cent levy to be introduced.
