The Irish Farmers Association claims the level of compensation being offered to turf cutters is too low and it wants it doubled.

It's calling on the Government to increase the package from 1 thousand euro per year for 15 years, to 2 thousand euro for 30 years.

Turf cutters from areas such as Galway are being told that if they can't find an alternative bog they must accept a financial package, which many do not want. There have already been protests by bog owners and turf cutters in Glenamaddy and Portumna.

IFA Connacht Vice President Padraic Divilly says people need to be compensated fairly if they can't cut turf.
