A man will appear in court this morning (Friday) charged with dangerous driving following an incident in which a pedestrian was seriously injured on the Barna Road in Galway.

A 21 year old man suffered serious leg injuries when he was hit by a car between Knocknacarra Cross and the Ballymoneen Road at around 1.40am last Sunday morning.

He was brought to University Hospital Galway, where his condition has been described as “serious, but continuing to recover”.

The young man – who is a former student of Colaiste Iognáid and Yeats College – is understood to have been living in England and had returned home for the Christmas.

Marius Strelciunas, who is originally from Kaunas in Lithuania, but living at 132 Manor Court on the Western Distributor Road in Galway, was charged with one count of dangerous driving, contrary to Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act following the incident.

He appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court on Christmas Eve, where he was remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear before Cloverhill District Court this morning.
