LIFE SENTENCE AT CASTLEBAR COURT FOR MAN WHO RAPED FOUR DAUGHTERS

A 50-year-old man has been given a life sentence at the Central Criminal Court in Castlebar for the rape of four of his daughters.
The man, who cannot be named to protect his victims, is already serving 14 years for the rape of another daughter.
He is the father of two of her children.
Earlier this year, the man's wife was sentenced to eight years in prison for the cruelty and neglect of eight of their children.
For 18 years, the children were violently raped and physically tortured by their father and whipped and beaten by their mother.
The brutality of the abuse and the grotesque nature of the torture was detailed in three victim impact statements read to the court by a female garda.
The couple, who are alcoholics, have 12 children and several of them attended the court in Castlebar.
