Leisureland under fire over flooding crisis

THE Board of Leisureland is under fire for its ‘chaotic’ handling of the crisis facing the facility since its enforced closure due to Winter storms.
The board of directors has been accused of ‘freezing out’ local clubs who normally use the facility and who are suffering a massive drop-off in membership.
Income of clubs has also fallen due to the prolonged closure, which will stretch to September.
The board has also been attacked for creating a ‘wall of silence’ through a lack of communication with the groups.
However, the chairman of the board has defended its strategy of communications and stressed the flooding was an unfortunate event but one that was out of the board’s control.
The board has denied accusations that clubs have been ‘frozen out’ and said they were appraised of the situation at informal meetings with the manager of the facility.
Galway’s three main swimming groups – Galway Swimming Club, Laser Swimming Club and Shark Swimming Club – have complained to election candidate David Burke of receiving just one communication from the board since January updating them on the status of the swimming pool.
Parents are also said to be furious with the lack of communication.
Burke, a Fianna Fáil election candidate in Galway City West, says clubs are suffering hugely as a result of the continuing closure of the pool.
